In the way of waka, from of old, rhyme has lain hidden

五・七・五・七・七 調べを重ね five, seven, five, seven, seven, measure laid on measure

花を詠み 月を仰ぎ 風を聴き we sing the flowers, look up to the moon, listen to the wind

同じ音など 露ほども追わず and never chase the same sound, not by a dewdrop

言の葉は 余韻に託し 静かに結ぶ the leaves of words, left to their lingering echo, close in quiet

露のごとくに 意味を残して leaving their meaning behind, like dew

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indemai!

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indesawai!

Hitoniwakatachi, katanosekai!

Yōkainiwain, hibikusekai!

To rhyme is a shameful thing

幼き戯れ 品なく候 a childish game, and without grace, I hold

音を重ぬるは 野暮なるしるし to stack sound on sound is the mark of a boor

言の形こそ 雅のしるし the form of words, the mark of refinement

意味は一つに 静かに収め keep meaning to one, and lay it quietly away

型を守りて 美を極めん keep to the form, and so perfect beauty

And yet, who laid this down?

The ancients? A god? Or who, then?

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indemai!

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indesawai!

Hitoniwakatachi, katanosekai!

Yōkainiwain, hibikusekai!

Takutakutaku — Furanai!

Patupatupatupatu — Raku!

Rakuioooo — Onegusarai!

Iooooo!

The yōkai laugh: “Who decided that?”

“Humans decided, you say? We never heard of it!”

When the moon bends, words bend too

影が踊れば 意味まで踊る when shadows dance, even meaning dances

一つの意味を 二つにねじり twist one meaning into two

二つの音を 三つに結ぶ tie two sounds into three

恥ずかしければ なおさら踏め if it shames you, rhyme the more

笑われるほど もっと響け! the more they laugh, the more you ring!

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indemai!

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indesawai!

Hitoniwakatachi, katanosekai!

Yōkainiwain, hibikusekai!

Takutakutaku — Furanai!

Patupatupatupatu — Raku!

Rakuioooo — Onegusarai!

Iooooo!

Cross the sea, and rhyme dances

シェイクスピアさえ 呪文を唱える even Shakespeare chants a spell

「Double, double, toil and trouble!」

「Double, double, toil and trouble!」

「Double, double, toil and trouble!」

Humans will say, “This is mere craft”

違う!」 the yōkai laugh, “Craft? Not so!”

Sound runs on ahead of meaning,”

“resonance brings the meaning along!”

Humans have form

Yōkai have rhyme

Humans have meaning

Yōkai have resonance

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indemai!

Yōkai! Yōkai! Indesawai!

Hitoniwakatachi, katanosekai!

Yōkainiwain, hibikusekai!

Le loup criait sous les feuilles The wolf cried out beneath the leaves

En crachant les belles plumes spitting out the lovely feathers

De son repas de volailles : of his meal of fowl:

Comme lui je me consume like him, I consume myself.

Takutakutaku — Furanai!

Patupatupatupatu — Raku!

Rakuioooo — Onegusarai!

Iooooo!

Hitoniwakatachigaaru

Yōkainiwaingaaru

Hitoniwaimigaaru

Rakuioooo — Onegusarai!

Iooooo!
